How Long Have You Been Overweight?

Not Everyone With Binge Eating Disorder is necessarily overweight, but I think a large number of people probably are. I was overweight as a young child (”husky” if you want to be specific), and later in life my weight cycled dramatically as I fought to lose weight only to regain it later.

It took me a long time to realize that my binge eating was actually a different problem than simply overeating. Once I was able to identify the problem and realize that I wasn’t alone I could starting working to attack the problem.

The other thing I found disconcerting was that, as a man, very little help and guidance was available to me specifically. Looking back on it I don’t think that the solutions to the problem aren’t necessarily different for men versus women, but from my limited perspective I felt even more “odd” because I was a man with an eating disorder.

I do think the media fill our brains of what the ideal woman should look like much more than what the ideal man should look like. This must contribute to the large number of women with eating disorders. Nonetheless some experts estimate the there are as many men with BED as women, but women are much more likely to see professional help. Therefore a lot of statistics show that more women have BED than men, which may not be the case.
